The Notebook turned into a cult-classic and the prime reason for it was the obvious chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. However, despite the connection between the two on-screen, director Nick Cassavetes revealed that things weren't always easy between the two. In fact, Gosling had asked for McAdams to be replaced mid-scene during the early portion of The Notebook.
The director recalled, "They were really not getting along one day on set. Really not."
"And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.'”

It is said that McAdams stood her ground behind the scenes during a meeting that involved Gosling as well. Following the resolution to the dispute, things became amicable, and clearly they were on the same page for the shoot given their chemistry.
Rachel McAdams And Ryan Gosling Were Asked About Their Intimacy In The Notebook, But The Questions Were A Little Too Deep
Back in late-June of 2004, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams appeared to discuss their film. What started off as a normal interview, turned quite awkward after repeated questions about their intimacy in the film.
"You don't know each other at the beginning of the film, and you have to love scenes. How do you get to know one another," the interview asks. Both Gosling and McAdams keep quiet at the start, while Ryan jokes about and breaks the ice answering, "well you have love scenes in your private time."
The host would continue on with the topic, asking if the intimacy scenes were uncomfortable. As McAdams revealed that Gosling was a gentleman, the host persisted asking, "what would someone who wasn't a gentleman do?" To which McAdams felt clearly awkward to answer.

Despite the bizarre questioning, fans praised both Ryan and Rachel for the way they handled the questions.

As fans alluded to, the chemistry between Gosling and McAdams was very real, especially given that they started to date later on after the film.
Rachel McAdams And Ryan Gosling Maintained An Amicable Relationship Despite Their Real-Life Breakup
Much to the delight of fans, Gosling and McAdams did in fact date. However, it was shorter than most would've liked. Gosling admits his personal life took a hit when the breakup took place.
"Women are mad at me," he said at the time. A girl came up to me on the street, and she almost smacked me. Like, 'How could you? How could you let a girl like that go?"
Gosling continued, "I feel like I want to give people hugs. They seem so sad. Rachel and I should be the ones getting hugs! Instead, we’re consoling everybody else."
Both their personal lives and careers went into different directions following their breakup. Nonetheless, there are no hard feelings, as Rachel McAdams discussed a question linking Gosling to Doctor Strange.
The actress revealed that she would've been in favor of reuniting with Ryan on-screen.
"I’d love to work with [Ryan] again. I didn’t know that [he was linked with Doctor Strange]. Benedict was signed on when it came across my plate so he’s the only ever Doctor Strange I’ve known of.”
Fans are hoping that the two reunite at some point on the big screen down the road, but it doesn't seem likely, at least for the time being.
