The Los Angeles designer says she took all the coloring for her collection from the Aztec print of a rayon chains scarf and had yardage made up in the overall chevron pattern. She does several versions of separates in these fabrications that combine grape, burgundy, mauve, dark green, rust, camel. These are colors for her coordinates in Austrian print challis. wool plaid, striped wools, brushed cotton challis. angora wool serape stripes, and for sheer wool jerseys, wool flannels and silk stripes.
Nylon jersey dresses and jodhpurs are in bright Sling blue, hot rose and pewter. In addition to Zouave knickers she makes a peg leg pant. Sues does a few bold floral prints in red and green combined with black point d'esprit. but the bulk of the collection is in the soft muted tones that are her specialty. The Phyllis Sues line retails from S30 (for a little knit vest) to $200 (for the sweater coat) and will be available in August and September in Los Angeles stores.

The way things work is in intriguing multiple layering schemes so adaptable to our California cool mornings, hot noons, cool evenings. For instance, a striped sweater coat has a black knit Pierrot collar that turns out to double as a jacket over the coat and looks great.
Under the coat is a black wool jersey helmet tunic dress over Zouave knickers. In another layering feat. Sues combines a skinny drawstring multicolor striped T-shirt, stitched down dirndl skirt in grape brushed cotton, a hooded striped-solid reversible jumper, a soft blouson shirt. And if you minus a few things, you can add a reversible camisole or flyaway vest. These saucy little vests float through the collection in different fabrications to go with dresses as well as blouses that combine with skirts and pants.
Some of the dresses are as simple as the layering is compound and they reflect the soft niceties of Sues detailing. Little Peter Pan collars, for instance, are set on shirred V-necklines of striped silk dresses. Peasant necklines are shirred or drawstring or gently tied on pouf sleeved one and two-piece dresses.
